Solar Cells & Photovoltaic Solar Cells
![]()
In addition to being used in combination to construct solar modules, photovoltaic solar cells also generate the energy necessary for numerous products and devices including powered toys, portable fans, and residential lighting for decks and yards. By employing photovoltaic technologies, these products become self-sufficient with regards to their energy needs, freeing them from the limitations of electrical wiring and the hassles of battery power.
Using a state-of-the-art automated cell processing line, Solar Power Industries can produce photovoltaic solar cells up to 156mm by 156mm. Made from multicrystalline silicon wafer substrates, typically 220 microns thick, they come in both two-bus and three-bus configurations.
In order to maximize light absorption, SPI coats the front surface of each solar cell with a blue silicon nitride anti-reflective materials deposited by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition). An alloyed aluminum layer makes up the backside, effectively reflecting any light that initially passes through back up into the solar cell to be absorbed. This also makes the front of the solar cell negative and the back positive upon illumination. Screen-printed and fired silver front bus bars and back interconnect contacts complete the cell and render it ready for use in solar modules or smaller solar powered devices.
